VERL W. KILGORE SR.

Verl W. Kilgore Sr., 97, of Coeburn, passed away Friday, April 10, 2020, at The Laurels in Norton, VA.

He resided in Coeburn, Va. all of his life and was a member of Mary’s Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. He was part owner and officer of Kilgore Wholesale Grocery Company. He was past-president and member of the Coeburn Kiwanis Club for 50+ years, a member of the Coeburn Masonic Lodge #97 A.F. & A.M. for over 70 years and was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for a great number of years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Grace Farmer Kilgore; his parents, Emmett J. and Earna Kilgore; one son, Warren Kilgore; a grandson, Michael Kilgore; a sister, Juanita Reese; and three brothers, E. J. “Junior” Kilgore, Charles “C. L.” Kilgore and Willard Kilgore.

He is survived by five sons, James “Jim” Kilgore and wife Gloria Sue, Ronnie Joe Kilgore and wife Sherry, Larry Kilgore and wife Wanda Sue, Denny Kilgore and wife Diana and Benny Kilgore, all of Coeburn; six grandchildren, Jeff Kilgore and wife Tammy, Krystal Greenquist and husband Rob, Rebecca Austin and husband John, Chad Kilgore and wife Angela, April Kilgore, and Brandi Stanley and husband Jamie; eight great grandchildren, Jacob Kilgore, Taylor Arney, Hunter Helbert, Braelynn Bruce, Autumn Kilgore, Savannah Stanley, Shelby Stanley and Katie Kilgore; three great-great grandchildren, Raelynn Arney, Luke Arney and Parker Arney; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Mary Bond his former caregiver and to the staff of The Laurels for their care and kindness.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to The Laurels Retirement and Assisted Living, 5635 Big Stone Gap Drive, Norton, VA 24273.

A graveside service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 13, 2020 at Laurel Grove Cemetery, Norton with Rev. Marty Puckett officiating.
