KINSHIP NAVIGATOR CORNER: Help available for older citizens

May 04, 2020

Nancy Boyd

As we comply with the order to stay at home and social distance, the Kinship Navigator Program continues to reach out to the Kinship Care community of caregivers in Dickenson, Buchanan, Wise, Scott, Lee, Russell, Tazewell and the city of Norton.
With the changes in our world not seen in this generation we are bombarded by news that causes stress in our daily lives. As each of us deals with our own unique situation, sharing what we face over social media has become a daily occurrence.
Since we are socially separated we have turned more and more to digital visits. For many of our older citizens who are raising grandchildren or other related kin, this might not be something they are able to do. Friendly telephone calls to check on those families has been something the Kinship Navigator program has been doing. We want to connect with this population and offer information, referrals and assistance in navigating what has become a scary time.

If you need help locating food resources, information on parenting and activities to keep children engaged or simply want to talk about your situation you can contact the main number at 276/926-1661 and leave a message with the front desk. They will have someone from the Kinship Navigator program contact you and assist you in finding appropriate services. We hope that this ends soon and we can again meet face to face.
