JESSIE RAY CARTER

October 08, 2021

Jessie Ray Carter, 32 of Wise, Virginia passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 3, 2021 surrounded by his family.
He was a 2007 graduate of J.J. Kelly High School where he participated in track, basketball, cross country and 9 O’clock Club. He was an avid hiker and loved being outdoors. He had an immense love for Kentucky Wildcat Basketball and the Dallas Cowboys. He also had a love for music such as Jeff Buckley and Ryan Adams. Jessie was a gentle giant and had a larger than life personality. With his big blue eyes and kind smile, he had a way of making everyone feel special. If you knew Jessie, you loved him. He was just that guy. Our world will be a little less bright without him.

Jessie is survived by his mom, Rebecca Henry (Chuck) of Big Stone Gap; Nanny and Papaw, Rose and Ray Carter of Wise; one sister, Morgan Riner (Jeremiah) of Mt. Carmel, TN and one brother Cole Henry of St. Petersburg, FL. He is also survived by a niece, Everly Kate Riner. Jessie had two uncles, Ray Carter (Mechelle) and Jeff Carter (Christine) both of Wise; one Aunt Annie Spurlock (Les) Johnson City, TN. Jessie grew up with several of his cousins that were also more like brothers and sisters: Allison Carter, Ashley Hayes, Nicole Collier, Jeff, Zack and Chris Carter, Ava and Noah Stough, Alex Hayes, Kailee Adkins and Halle Collier. He is also survived by a very special aunt, Sue Bruner.

Honorary Pallbearers include Jessie Miles, Chad Bartlett, William Botts, Burney Mosley, Aaron Jones and Cody Steele.

Due to Covid 19 affecting most of the immediate family, there will only be a graveside service. It will be conducted on Friday, October 8 at 2:00 p.m. in the Wise Cemetery located behind First Bank and Trust in Wise with Pastor Jeremiah Riner officiating. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery for services. The family requests that those attending please wear a mask.

A Celebration of Life will be hosted by the family later to allow the family to recover from Covid 19. We invite anyone that would wish to contact any of the family, please reach out to one of us and we will either provide a phone number or have someone call you. Thank you to everyone for all the prayers and kind words during this difficult time. We ask that in lieu of flowers due to the nature of the service that you perform an act of kindness or participate in activity that you know Jessie would have loved. “Oh, my sweet Carolina, what compels me to go. Oh, my sweet disposition, may you one day carry me home. May you one day carry me home.” -Ryan Adams
