JAMES D. ‘BUTCH’ CAUDILL

James D. “Butch” Caudill, 76, passed away Monday, January 24, 2022 at Norton Community Hospital. He was born and raised in Norton, Va.

He served one tour of active duty in the navy from August 13, 1964 to August 12, 1968.  He was a member of the naval reserve from August 13, 1968 to August 12, 1970.  He moved to Big Stone Gap after he returned from the navy when he met and married his wife Brenda. James was captain of the BSG Volunteer Rescue Squad and president of the Big Stone Gap Little League for many years.  He was a founding member of Spirit and Truth Worship Center.  

James was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda S. Caudill and Baby Girl Caudill, his parents Della and Howard Caudill, and his sister Brenda Stephenson. 

He was survived by his son Kenneth R. Caudill and wife Tanya, special son Neil Flanary; his grandchildren Jeremiah, Abigail, and Caleb Caudill; his sister Nila Hamilton and husband Larry, brother Marvin and wife Barb; his nieces and nephews Valarie Hamilton, Wade Stephenson and Ashley, Joshua Caudill and wife Kelly; Lisa Boggs and husband Ronathan; Heather Okerson and husband Ryan.  He has many great nieces and nephews Including Jaden Boggs, Callen Okerson, Emelee Boggs, Easton Okerson, Avery Stephenson, Carter Stephenson, and Meredith Caudill. 

For the last few years  Butch has had a special relationship with his adoptive grandchildren Hannah, Hayley and Hayden Hutchins; Declan and Colin Wiggins; and Lucy Ray.  He was Papaw Butch to every child that came through the doors of Spirit and Truth Worship Center. Butch loved God with all of his heart.  He was and is an inspiration to everyone who knew him.  He will be greatly missed.  

Family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 29 at Spirit and Truth Worship Center in Big Stone Gap.  A celebration of life service will begin at 3:00 p.m.
