At Saturday's Pine Mountain Naturalists Rally, Caleb Estep was awarded a Calimites fossil by retired science teacher Bonnie Aker, right, after her presentation on the rocks and geology of Southwest Virginia. The son of Mitchell and Katie Estep of Pikeville, Ky., Caleb completed a short quiz on the rock cycle. The fossil was formed about 300 million years ago in the region’s coal beds.
