June 23–27, Middle School: “The Green City Robot.” While learning about different types of “Green Energy” students will construct a LEGO city which includes a wind turbine, solar house, dam, trash collection area, power plant and much more. Working on teams, they will build a robot and master NXT programming to solve challenges related to renewable energy. Teams will compete to save the city! Appalachian Children’s Theatre is again partnering with the City of Norton Parks and Recreation to present science and engineering day camps for students of all ages. This year’s line-up is co-sponsored by Norton City Schools though a STEAM grant from Verizon, and features several new camps directed by science and engineering specialist Jani Purtee. ACT and the City of Norton Parks and Recreation will offer a cheerleading camp, a basketball camp and an environmental camp later in the summer. All camps are free for city of Norton students, $50 for all other participants. Limited scholarships are available.
