JOSEPH BENJAMIN POWERS

Joseph Benjamin Powers, 76, of Norton, passed away unexpectedly Sunday March 1, 2020 at Norton Community Hospital.
Joe was of the Baptist faith. He was a loving father, brother and friend. He was a graduate of Pound High School and Virginia Tech where he earned a masters degree. Joe was a retired professional engineer. He had worked at the Norfolk Naval Station, Bethlehem Steel in Jenkins, KY and retired from Penn Virginia with a total of over 50 years work experience. He was blessed with both common and book sense.
Joe enjoyed exercising, he was regular at the gym and spin cycle classes. He was a dedicated runner until he was unable to continue. He loved his dogs and walked them daily. Joe was a regular at high school sporting events and enjoyed watching boxing. He was an avid reader and enjoyed word puzzles.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents Lonnie and Ruth (Sutphin)Powers.
Survivors include his daughter, Heather Landrum and husband David of Bluffton, SC; his long time companion Corina Torres of Norton; a sister Marcella Powers of Pound; a brother Fred Powers and wife Ann of Chesterfield, MI; special children Jaime Foster, Naomi Torres and Alena Bowen who affectionately called him “Pappy Joe”; a niece Dawn Hammond; a nephew Ben Powers; special friends Kyle and Bob Redman; and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn his passing and cherish his memory.
Memorial services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 4 in the Baker Funeral Home chapel with Reverend Troy Belcher officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until time of services. View our recent obituaries at: www.bakerfuneralhomepound.com

In lieu of flowers the family asked that donations be made to the Wise County Animal Shelter or a charity of their choice.
