May 06, 2020

Two Wallens Ridge State Prison employees have tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections.

The cases are listed in a Monday morning update on the department’s website.

No Wallens Ridge inmates are reported to have tested positive.

No COVID-19 cases are reported at Red Onion State Prison or at Wise Correctional Unit, commonly known as Camp 18, near Coeburn.

In an April 30 update, the department noted that along with testing inmates who have COVID-19 symptoms, it is testing all individuals who are finishing their sentences on the day of their release.

Employees are tested separately. All individuals entering any facility also are screened for an elevated temperature.
