Laurels resident celebrates 99 years in style

June 02, 2020

Nan Fletcher Norris celebrated her milestone 99th birthday on May 28.

A parade of emergency vehicles, along with friends and family, was held at

The Laurels assisted living facility in Wise to share birthday wishes.

A Big Stone Gap native, Nan received her RN degree from the University of Virginia, married husband Tom Norris in 1943 and raised three children, Anne, Margie and George. They moved 18 times during Tom’s career with the National Park Service, finally settling in Pound, next door to their daughter Anne Sturgill in 1996.

Anne is currently in San Francisco receiving cancer treatments and could not be here to celebrate Nan’s big day, so loved ones at All Saints Episcopal Church of Norton helped make it a day to remember.

Organizers wish to thank everyone sending Nan birthday wishes including Lost Creek Ministries and their Sunday school “Mighty Oaks,” who sent handmade cards and drawings. Special thanks to The Laurels, EMS Fire and Rescue of Norton and Wise, LifeCare Ambulance and state and local law enforcement.
