Classic Cars for Classic Seniors Parade Saturday at the Laurels

June 18, 2020

Quarantine in place and social distancing this spring have been particularly difficult for our local senior citizens residing at Norton’s Laurels Retirement & Assisted Living, who aren’t allowed to have visitors.
It is high time to provide a fun activity to cheer them up! The family and friends of Garnett Gilliam, a well-known retired educator in the Wise County School System and founder of the Lonesome Pine School and Heritage Center in Big Stone Gap, plan to do just that! Garnett, the residents and staff of The Laurels will be honored with a “Classic Cars for Classic Seniors’ parade and cruise in on Saturday, June 20, at 10:30 a.m. The event is co-sponsored by the Laurels, the Dan’l Boone Car Club (AACA) and the Lonesome Pine School and Heritage Center.

The sponsors wish to stir fond memories of days gone by while encouraging care, concern, and support for residents while providing a chance to share fun times. The planned activities will include dress and music from the 1950s and 1960’s. Residents and staff will provide special recognition of vehicles and refreshments for parade participants. All activities will take place outside with The Laurels’ social distancing policies in place for the duration of this event. All who wish to participate in this parade and cruise in are cordially invited.

The Laurels Retirement & Assisted Living is located at 5635 Bsg Drive in Norton, 276/679-5635. You may also contact Dave Williams, Dan’l Boone Car Club, who is coordinating with the Gilliam family to organize the parade and cruise in. Dave may be reached at swvakid@charter.net or 571/499-3588 for more information. We hope to see you there!
