County records 27 new virus cases in one day

August 12, 2020

The Virginia Department of Health announced Friday that the COVID-19 statistics to be published that day would “contain a significant increase due to a data backlog from earlier in the week.”

The new data was to indicate 2,015 new cases statewide, according to a press release, adding, “This figure includes information that should have been reported on Wednesday and Thursday of this week as well as the regular numbers for Friday.”

CURRENT NUMBERS

As of Tuesday, the department reported a total of 97,712 confirmed and 4,033 “probable” COVID-19 cases across Virginia since it began tracking the numbers months ago. It reported 2,232 confirmed deaths and 112 probable deaths.

Locally, the department reported a total of 168 COVID-19 cases in Wise County, with three deaths, and 19 cases in Norton, with no deaths, since the pandemic began.

Tuesday’s Wise County number represented an increase of 27 cases since Monday.

Again, those are total numbers over several months, not just active cases.
