DAVID JOSEPH BARRY

David Joseph Barry, 83, of Wise, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2020 at the Dickenson Community Hospital in Clintwood, VA.

Mr. Barry was born in Banning, CA before migrating to Garden Grove, CA. After graduating from Garden Grove High School in 1955 he joined the United States Navy where he proudly served his country.

He served in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War and in the Atlantic Fleet during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After circumnavigating the globe several times he retired from the Navy in 1976 and returned to his native Southern California.

Mr. Barry was heavily involved with his church in Garden Grove and coaching his son’s sports teams. He mentored many young people during this time.

In 1992 he moved to Pound with his wife and sons and remained there until her death in 2016. He was a faithful member of Mountain Life Church in Pound.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Wilma Jean Barry; his parents, William J. Barry Sr. and Martha M. Barry; four sisters; and two brothers.

He is survived by his sister, Cecilia Watson of Garden Grove, CA; four sons, David Barry and wife Lydia of Florida, Stephen Barry and wife Kristy of Clintwood, Paul Barry and wife Catherine of Garden Grove and James Barry and wife Jennifer of Clintwood; eight grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Family will receive friends from noon until 1 p.m. Friday, August 28 at the Sturgill Funeral Home in Wise. Graveside committal services will follow with Pastor Brian Hogg officiating. Burial will be in the Dewey Memorial Cemetery in Pound.
