City waives tax penalty for now

October 27, 2020

Norton City Council has agreed to temporarily eliminate penalties and interest on city taxes that were not paid on time.

Meeting Oct. 20, council passed an amendment to city code wiping out penalties and interest on the second half of real estate taxes and personal property taxes from Oct. 15 to Nov. 15.

The temporary ordinance will expire Nov. 16.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and because one city office experienced COVID cases, citizens were limited in their ability to request information about taxes owed, City Manager Fred Ramey explained. Council wanted to delay penalties and interest.

No citizens commented during a public hearing on the measure, which council passed unanimously.

City taxes were due Oct. 15. If you have questions concerning a late payment, contact the treasurer’s office, 679-7246.
