JAMES DANIEL CHURCH SR.

James Daniel “Jim” Church Sr., age 65, of Pound, entered eternity on Thursday, September 9, 2021, in Holston Valley Medical Center after a sudden illness. Jim was a valuable and much-loved member of Pound Rescue Squad.

He joined Pound Rescue Squad (then Wise County Rescue Squad) in August 1980 and served as an EMT for many years. Jim served much of Southwest Virginia selflessly. He served in many officer capacities throughout his 41 years with the organization. At the time of his passing, Jim was serving as a valued member of the Board of Directors. He was a much beloved personality within Pound Rescue Squad and will be greatly missed. Jim spent many years working as a carpenter and was a current employee of Dickenson County Ambulance Service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carson and Gustava Moore Church; wife, Freda Pilkenton Church; brother, Kyle Church; sister, Mildred Church; and brother-in-law, Frank Bowman.

Jim is survived by two sons, James Daniel (Tracy) Church, Jr. of Morristown, TN, and Joshua Church of Wise; granddaughter, Brooklyn Church; sisters, Elizabeth Bowman of Abingdon and Ruth (Alex) Skelton of Kingsport, TN; brother, Larry (JoLinda) Church of Pound; fiancée, Tamara Cantrell and her sons, Christopher Cantrell and Daniel Cantrell; special grandson, Elijah Cantrell; special niece, Mia Eve Carico; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 3-5 p.m. Sunday, September 19 in the First Church of God, 702 East Main Street, Wise with Pastor Gary Maggard officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Pound Rescue Squad or to Wise Church of God.
