One death, 95 new cases

Wise County saw 81 new COVID-19 cases between last Thursday and yesterday.

The county’s total number of COVID cases since spring 2020 increased from 11,184 to 11,265 in four days, according to the Virginia Department of Health.
The county’s total number of COVID-related deaths increased by one, from 204 to 205.

The health department’s cumulative positive case count for Norton increased by 14, from 1,413 to 1,427.
The number of total deaths in the city remained at 22.

The latest sub-variant of last year’s omicron variant is spreading rapidly, although death rates have slowed.

Statewide, the total number of confirmed cases since the pandemic began rose from 1,360,771 Thursday to 1,368,148 yesterday, an increase of 7,377. The number of cases deemed “probable” rose from 547,971 Thursday to 551,442 yesterday, an increase of 3,471.
During the same period, the number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths in Virginia increased by 18 to 17,348.

The number of probable COVID-19 deaths increased by eight to 3,464.
