CLINTON FLETCHER DEAN

November 09, 2023

Clinton Fletcher (Pete) Dean, 87, passed away on Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at Indian Path Community Hospital in Kingsport, TN after a lengthy struggle with cancer.

Born in Corbin, KY, Pete eventually moved with the family to west Norton. He attended Wise High School where he met Peggy and they began their life-long romance. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, with stations in Panama City, Florida, and Eielson Air Force Base, Fairbanks, Alaska.

Pete, only strangers knew him as Clinton, proudly worked most of his life with the Old Dominion Power Company. He retired from ODP as a crew foreman. Pete also worked hard in the community of Wise, especially when his children were young. He was president of the J.J. Kelly Band Boosters for a number of years, including when the band traveled to Mexico. He also held many roles with the Wise Little League, including president, and literally hung the first lights at the town’s little league field, helping expand playing time for hundreds of kids and their families. Pete was of the Methodist faith and a member of the Wise Trinity Methodist Church.

Pete was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Peggy Jean (Mullins) Dean; son, Charles Jonathon Dean; parents, William A. and Myrtle (Wyatt) Dean; sisters, Delores (Toddy) Leonard, Christine Davidson, Freddie Bays, and Billie Fulton; brothers, William (Dub) Dean, Raymond J (Gentle) Dean, Teddy Dean, Jerry Dean, and Larry Dean.

Surviving are a daughter, Chris McKnight and husband James of Wise; son, Fletcher Dean and wife Jane Meade-Dean of Midland, Mich.; grandchildren, Will Dean, Taylor Dean, and Maggie Dean; sisters, Jo Ann Stewart and Lonza Keene; as well as many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses, and caregivers who worked so hard to make Pete comfortable. We would especially like to thank Becky Thacker, whose patience and care was so reassuring to Pete in his final days, and Kent Adams, whose constant friendship and presence was tremendously valued by all of us.
