JESSEE HICKS

November 13, 2023

Jessee Hicks, 79 of Big Stoney Creek, VA went to be with the Lord November 4, 2023. Jessee was a retired coal miner with a total of 31 years of service between Clinchfield Coal Company, Westmoreland Coal Company, Bullet Mine and Bullet Prep Plant. He was a member of UMWA District 17 and Local 1607. Jessee had Black Lung disease but received no financial funds from the Department of Labor. He was a devoted member of Green’s Chapel on Big Stoney Creek. He married Dorothy Begley on May 25, 1964. Together they worked hard and made a family. They had a daughter, Pamela and a son, Jessee, Jr. Jessee loved to farm, raise cattle and slaughter hogs. He loved going ginseng hunting with Dorothy and going to the river to fish with Junior. He enjoyed hunting with his long-gone buddies, the Begley brothers, Conley and Cecil. Later in life he loved frying pies with Dorothy and selling pies and candy at the Gate City Flea Market.

Jessee is preceded in death by his father and mother, Harry and Beatrice (Ryan) Hicks; brother, Joe Hicks; sister, Connie (Hicks) Mullins; nephew, Gary Mullins; and brother-in-law, Bryce Gillenwater.

Mr. Hicks is survived by Dorothy, Pam and Junior; one sister, Faye (Hicks) Gillenwater; several nieces and nephews; special neighbors, Billy, Lisa and Chelsea Begley whom he loved dearly; special nephew, Rick Begley.

Christ is real and His word is true. Jessee’s illness began after Easter 2023. Jesus gave him the opportunity to overcome the greatest sickness there is… SIN and Jessee did. The family would like to thank the Chaplain on ICU-Step down floor for singing the great song “Jesus Loves Me” with Jessee. Jessee would pray to God and thank Him - then “SunDowners” would happen. Pam and Junior count it an honor and privilege to have been their dad’s caregivers. Jessee and Dorothy were always there for their children.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Rye Cove Community Church, 1537 Rye Cove Memorial Road, Duffield, VA 24244.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at HMG in Duffield; Holston Valley staff in the ER, ICU 4thand 3rd floor; Mountain Region Home Health and Physical Therapy; Ballad Lung at Norton; Breathing Equipment technician, Brian Middleton; Life Care Ambulance Service; Haysi man that would bring in the middle of the night oxygen concentrator from Lincare; Duffield Life Saving Crew; Walgreens-Broadwater Pharmacy; Wilcox Staff, 2ndfloor; Caris Healthcare Hospice; and UMWA for fighting for his benefits and rights.
