One week, two deaths, 59 cases

New COVID-19 cases — and related deaths — continue to surge in Wise County.

The county reported 49 new COVID-19 cases between Jan. 2 and Tuesday.

According to Virginia Department of Health statistics, the county’s total number of cases since spring 2020 was 15,686 as of Tuesday, compared to 15,637 one week earlier.

Wise County’s total number of COVID deaths increased by two, from 254 to 256.

The department’s cumulative positive case count for Norton increased by 10, from 1,821 to 1,831.

The city’s total number of deaths remained at 22.
