Michael Eugene Holbrook, 63, closed his eyes on earth and opened them in glory when Jesus reached for his hand on Saturday, January 20th. He was surrounded by his family after a devastatingly hard-fought battle with colon cancer. Mike fought valiantly against the war that quickly ravaged his body and is now rejoicing in his eternal home with our Lord and Savior, Jesus. He is made new.

He was a graduate of Saint Paul High School and served in the Marine Corps from 1979-1983. He was employed at the Wise County Sheriff’s Office as dispatcher, jailer, road deputy, D.A.R.E Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Crisis Negotiator and Captain finishing out his service as Chief Investigator for Wise County. He was also employed by the Virginia State Police as a Drug Task Force Officer. He was a board member of Southwest Virginia Crisis Center and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Team. He also served on the Child Advocacy Center Wise County. He was a member of the Coeburn First Baptist Church since 1993 serving as Deacon and Trustee among several other positions. He was a graduate of Forward Wise County and was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Wise County Chamber of Commerce in 2010. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Coeburn and served as Treasurer, Secretary, and President. He served as a member of Coeburn Town Council from 2016-2020. He served on the Board of Directors for the Lays Hardware Center for the Arts and volunteered there for many years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 243.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Clifford and Noralee Holbrook, grandparents, William and Lena McConnell, Pat, and Pearly Holbrook

Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Rose Mary Holbrook; children, Zac Holbrook and wife Veda, Heather Short and husband Jonathan; grandchildren, Judah Short, Cadence Fletcher, and Sophia Fletcher; sister, Deborah Cantrell and husband Bill; nieces, Lisa and Christy Hughes; a dear cousin and friend, Eddie Holbrook; special friends, Bill Hunsaker and Mike Potter, and a host of other nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Life was held 3 p.m. Sunday, January 28, 2024, at the Sturgill Funeral Home 310 6th Street NW Coeburn; Pastor Robert Ledford officiated. Visitation was from 1 p.m. to the time of service at the funeral home. Military Honors were conducted by the Marines Honor Guard and Local VFW and DAV and American Legion and the Wise County Sheriff Department.

In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial contributions be made to the Lays Hardware Center for the Arts at P. O. Box 2766 Coeburn, VA 24230. Aside from being with his family, this was Mike’s favorite place to be with some of his dearest and best friends.

Honorary Pallbearers: Bill Dotten, Bill Hunsaker, John Wright, Charlie McConnell and Robert Ledford. These special men are part of the “ROMEO” crew- Retired Old Men Eating Out. Mike looked forward to his weekly breakfast with his dearest friends.
