BUTCH HUTCHINSON
NORTON, VA – Butch Hutchinson, 68, died Sunday, May 26, 2024, at his residence. He was born and raised in Norton, VA and was a 1974 graduate of John I. Burton High School. He was a graduate of Berea College and went on to earn his master’s degree from Virginia Tech. He began his teaching career at John I. Burton High School in 1979 as technical instructor and director of transportation. He later was employed at the Wise County Career and Technical Center before his retirement in 2012. Butch was a member and deacon of the Wise Baptist Church. He was chairman of the board of the City of Norton Board of Zoning Appeals. He was very active in the Southwest Virginia Partnership, a volunteer organization to rehab housing for the disabled elderly. He was the owner and operator of Eljay Properties in Norton and enjoyed construction work. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Sybil Sturgill; two sisters, Dixie Hill and Fay Huff; two brothers, Bob Sturgill and Jack Sturgill.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Donna Farmer Hutchinson of Norton, VA; two sons, Greg Hutchinson of Pound, VA and Ben Bolling of Wise, VA; two daughters, Elora Thompson Hutchinson and her husband Jacob Thompson of Bristol, TN and Jayda McKay Hutchinson of Norton, VA; three brothers-in-law, Jim Hill, Sam Farmer, Steve Farmer; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Sturgill and Deanna Jarman; a brother-nephew, Robert Hill; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 pm Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. A celebration of life service will be held at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Mike Winters and Rev. Jim Collie officiating.
