NOTICE TO CONSUMERS of the Wise County Regional Water System Waterworks

November 11, 2024

NOTICE TO CONSUMERS
of the Wise County Regional Water System Waterworks
Waterworks ID No. 1195900
We have been advised by State Health Officials that the water supplied by this waterworks during the twelve-month monitoring period from October 1, 2023 through September 30, 2024 exceeded the four quarter Primary Maximum Contaminant Level locational running annual average of 0.080 milligrams per liter (mg/l) for Total Trihalomethane (TTHM) contained in the Commonwealth of Virginia/State Board of Health Waterworks Regulations. The four-quarter running annual average TTHM concentration is 0.082 mg/l. The locational running annual average exceedance occurred in the South Fork pressure zone.
This notice applies only to those Wise County PSA water customers supplied from the Wise County Regional Water Plant in Carfax.
Disinfection of public drinking water is necessary to prevent waterborne diseases such as typhoid and cholera. However, the disinfectants themselves can react with naturally occurring material in the source water to form unintended byproducts which may pose a health risk. Total Trihalomethane (TTHM) are known byproducts of the drinking water disinfection process that have a primary maximum contaminant level(s) and this waterworks is required to monitor the distribution system on a quarterly basis.
Some people who drink water containing trihalomethanes in excess of the MCL over many years could experience problems with their liver, kidneys, or central nervous systems, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.
We will continue to collect Total Trihalomethane (TTHM) and Haloacetic Acid (HAA5) samples every three months to determine compliance with the Waterworks Regulations. We anticipate the problem resolving in the near future as further testing is performed. Byproducts of the drinking water process are influenced by environmental conditions such as the temperature of the raw water taken from the Clinch River which are typically elevated during the 3rd quarter annually. The Wise County PSA re-chlorinates water at specific locations in the distribution system to insure adequate disinfection to meet regulations. Unfortunately, byproducts can occur while guaranteeing adequate disinfection is achieved.
This is not an immediate risk to consumers. If there had been an immediate risk, you would have been advised accordingly. No consumer action is necessary at this time.
