On Saturday, December 28, 2024 Shannon Clay Scott, 76, left this earth to join his heavenly father.
A lifelong resident of Wise County “The greatest place to live”, he graduated from J.J. Kelly High School and Clinch Valley College.
Shannon’s first job was at Piggly Wiggly, then Thompson and Litton for 14 years before Barnette Contractors, then served Wise County as its assistant and eventually County Administrator for 30 years. He and his wife, Shari owned and operated Shannon’s restaurant for 17 years. Through the years, he has been a member of numerous organizations that include the Wise County Chambers of Commerce, Alumni Board of Clinch Valley College, The Lions Club, Wise First Church of God for over 35 years, and he worked closely with Wise County Industrial Development and LENO Wisco. He was honored as a Kentucky Colonel and for his 30 plus years of membership with Wise Kiwanis.
Shannon was preceded in death by his parents, Mabel Robinette Scott and Ted Hunter Scott; siblings, Elizabeth, Barb Scott Jessee, Rex (Anna), Joe, Jack, Mack and Anthony; and nieces, Lisa Scott Arnold, Regina Scott Boggs, Pamela Jessee Baker, and Joan Scott Cusack.
Left to carry on his memory are his wife of over 55 years, Shari Dykstra Scott; daughters, Melanie Scott and Marcie Johnson and husband Bobby; his favorite person on this earth, grandson, Corey Scott; siblings, June Scott Sturgill and husband John Paul, Jerry Scott and wife Cindy, Gilmer Scott and wife Gwen, and Gordon Scott; in-laws, Billy Jessee and Renee Scott; special “adopted” daughters, Karen Kilgore and husband Jerry and Ruth Elkins and husband Eddie; along with dozens of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
The family would like to extend many thanks to Melinda Wright, FNP and nurse Kara, the team at Norton Cancer Center, In Home Care and Caris Healthcare/Hospice for their love and care.
Funeral services for Shannon Clay Scott will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 1, 2025 at the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel in Wise, VA with Pastor Jim Collie officiating. Burial will follow in the Scott Family Cemetery on Powells River in Norton, VA. Family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. till time of services at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 1, 2025 at the Sturgill Funeral Home in Wise, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Southwest Virginia Cancer Center Patient Assistance Fund - 671 HWY 58 East, Norton, VA 24273.
