HAROLD LEE JONES JR
January 02, 2025
Harold Lee Jones Jr., 83, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2024.
Harold Lee Jones Jr. was the son of the late Harold L. Jones Sr. and Virginia (Hughes)Jones . He was born in Norton, Virginia. Harold graduated from John I. Burton High School. He met the love of his life Gretta (Greene) Jones at that time. They married on August 31, 1963. They were married for 61 years.
Harold was a family man and was also an extremely intelligent man. He worked in a wide variety of jobs over the years. He worked odd jobs all throughout high school. He then went on and worked as a civil engineer, a cartologist (creating many maps for the government as well as in a civil capacity for Wise County), and he was a surveyor for several mining companies as well. Just a few of the jobs that Harold had included working for the Army Map Service, VICC, Kodak, and Thompson and Litton. Later in life, he dedicated his time to serve others by learning the business of insurance. He would work diligently to ensure that his clients and their loved ones had life insurance. Harold truly cared about those around him and strived to make a difference.
Harold will be remembered by his family as a wonderful and loving husband, dad, papaw, great-papaw, brother, uncle, and friend. He was so loved by all of those around him, and he will be missed dearly. He never knew a stranger and could talk your ear off about anything. He loved to visit with his family and friends. He would always have plenty of stories to tell about his adventures in life, from riding motorcycles in his younger years to his time as an engineer. There was never a dull moment when he was around. Harold had a mischievous side to him as well, which his wife Gretta was often the recipient of. He liked to laugh and smile, especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His smile was infectious, and he could light up a room with it. He loved those around him with a great passion and enthusiasm. He will be dearly missed by all those who loved him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold L. Jones Sr.; mother, Virginia (Hughes) Jones; son, David Harold Jones; sister, Carolyn Sue Allman; and brothers-in-law Robert (Bob) Allman and Kyle Greene.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Gretta Jones; two daughters, Julie Jones (Wayne Evans), and Dana (Steven) Sturgill; a sister, Jennifer Jones (Mark Costello); and a sister-in-law Rebecca (Jim) Mullins. He leaves behind three grandsons, Justin Sturgill, Joshua Evans and Noah Sturgill; and one granddaughter, Allison (Roger) Elswick; four great-grandchildren, Elijah Sturgill, Braxton Sturgill, Sophia Elswick, and Chloe Elswick; a bonus great-granddaughter, Camryn Elswick; nephews, Shannon Allman, Casey Jones Costello, and Roger (Jenny) Mullins; nieces, Leslie (David) Villanueva, Stephanie (David) Amos, and Marcie Mullins; and a huge number of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and many other members of his family.
