Iron Mountain Collieries, LLC of P.O. Box 2470, Wise, Virginia 24293 is applying to the Virginia Mined Land Repurposing Program for an acreage addition of 107.51 acres to Permit 1102383 to conduct coal surface mining and reclamation operations at the following location: The State Plane coordinates are North 3,523,757.48 East 10,216,629.53. The location is 3.5 miles NW of Appalachia and 1.5 miles West of Arno. The receiving stream is Looney Creek of the Powell River. The project is located on the Appalachia USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle map. The Application Map showing the proposed permit area is attached in Section 21.2 of the application.
Drainage and wastewater resulting from the permitted operation will be discharged as follows: The receiving stream for this project is Looney Creek. The runoff will be from surface mine sediment control structures. These discharge locations can be seen on the Surface Water Hydrology Map in Application Section 21.2. The discharges will come from new sediment control structures that will be installed to control runoff from the permitted area.
Any person with a valid legal interest which might be adversely affected by this proposal, or an officer or head of any federal, state or local government agency or authority, may within 30 days of February 21, 2025 submit written comments or objections concerning this application and may also request, in writing, that the Mined Land Repurposing Program hold an Informal Conference concerning this application.
