A celebration of life was held at Coeburn Methodist Church on April 5, 2025 where the family received friends from 1-2 PM. Services followed at 2 PM with Reverend Shawn Wallace officiating. Friends and family served as honorary pallbearers.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served on the Isherwood. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Forestry from NC State, then a Master’s from Virginia Tech and started earning a PhD. He worked for the Virginia Department of Forestry and the West Virginia Department of Forestry, he was one of the first, sporting forester number 8. He delivered many lectures about forestry and conservation. Many have credited him with inspiring them to become foresters. In addition, he worked for Hamer Lumber Company and Penn Virginia Lumber Company. He also worked as a forestry consultant. Pat had stamina and surprised many. One young forester who came to consider Pat a second father figure went out on a survey with Pat and they agreed on a meeting place. Being much younger he was so confident that he would beat Pat there, only to be surprised when Pat was sitting there waiting on him and asked, “What took you so long?”
He enjoyed Westerns such as Lonesome Dove and Gun Smoke. He was an avid reader. He enjoyed working with his hands. He painted pictures of ships and ocean scenes, cabins, trucks, and many other things. He is reputed to be quite the handyman and wood worker. He loved motorcycles. Pat and Theresa took a motorcycle ride from Appalachian to Nova Scotia and back. He loved nature and animals. He took walks in the woods with his dog, Willie. Sometimes it was hard to tell if Willie was Pats pet or Pat was his pet. He also collected rocks on his walks and built a rock wall with them.
He loved his family and they loved him. He loved Theresa and she loved him. You needed to listen to what he was saying because he has a sneaky sense of humor. When Theresa was making sure he got the care he needed or saw to it, he did what he needed to do; he called her Nurse Ratchet. Then he submitted because he knew it was out of love and in his best interest. Pat was absolutely devoted to those he loved, including what some would call his Mistress; Gertrude his tractor.
He was a friend that will be dearly missed.
