NORTON, VA – Margie Juanita Compton, 95, died Thursday morning, May 29, 2025, at her residence. She was born in Jewell Ridge, Va. to the late James William Smith and Margie Kinder Smith. She worked as an RN at Mattie Williams Hospital in Richlands, Va. before retiring after 25 years of service in 1970. She was baptized at the age of 15 and was a member of the Gethsemane Baptist Church in Richlands, Va. She was a lifelong member of the Preceptor Alpha Omega Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. After her retirement in 1970 she moved to Norton, Va. where she became a full-time homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell Ray Compton; her siblings, Otis Smith, Faye Martin, Ralph and Robert Smith, Arthur Smith, Rufus Smith, Billy Gene Smith, David Smith, Walter (Tommy) Smith and Mary Ruth Davis.
She is survived by three daughters, Linda Brooks, Brenda Palmer, Deborah Lawson and her husband Gerald, all of Norton, Va.; a son, Stephen Smith and his wife Shirley of Lebanon, Va.; four grandchildren, Jason Brooks, Christopher Palmer, Jarod Smith and his wife Melissa and Adam Smith; three great grandchildren, Sloan Palmer, Keegan Palmer and Troy Brooks; two special nephews, Tim Compton and his wife Debra of Big Stone Gap, Va. and John Martin of Daytona Beach Fla.; three sisters-in-law, Meral Smith Skeens, Ruth Ann Smith and Lora Jane Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
We would like to send a special thank you to Anita Freeman and Delena McCurdy who became extended family members. We also want to thank Dr. Ashley Bevins and Molly Morgan of Hospice. We would also like to thank the Norton Rescue Squad for the exceptional care given to our mother.
A memorial service was held at 7 pm Monday, June 2, 2025, in the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tom Renfro officiating.
